Free Tax Help in Cookeville

You do not have to pay to file your taxes. If your household earned roughly $84,000 or less, IRS-certified volunteers will prepare and file your return for free through the VITA program, in person or online. Tennessee has no state income tax on wages, so for most people here that means one federal return and nothing else.

The short version

  • VITA gives you free, IRS-certified tax preparation if your household earned about $84,000 or less.
  • The Earned Income Tax Credit is worth up to $8,231, and roughly one in five people who qualify never claims it.
  • You have to file a return to get the credit, even if you owe nothing and were not required to file.
  • The IRS is phasing out paper refund checks, so you will likely need a bank account to receive your refund.
  • A refund advance is a loan. Filing for free and waiting a few weeks almost always leaves you with more money.

Where to file for free

Paid tax preparation costs the average filer around $250. For a straightforward return — a W-2 or two, maybe some kids, maybe a 1099 from side work — that is money you do not need to spend.

VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, is the best option for most people reading this. IRS-certified volunteers prepare and electronically file your return at no charge, and every return is quality-reviewed by a second person before it is submitted. The program has run for over fifty years. In Tennessee, United Way partner sites have set the eligibility line at about $84,000 in household income, though thresholds vary slightly from site to site.

If you are sixty or older, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide and the IRS Tax Counseling for the Elderly program offer the same kind of free in-person help, with volunteers who specialize in retirement and pension questions.

Local sites change from year to year, and most only operate from late January through April. The Putnam County Library has hosted free tax preparation clinics in past filing seasons — worth a call in January to ask about the current year. The most reliable way to find a site near you is the IRS VITA and TCE locator, linked below, or dialing 211.

If you would rather do it from home, GetYourRefund.org connects you with the same IRS-certified volunteers virtually — you upload your documents and a volunteer prepares the return. MyFreeTaxes.com, run by United Way, offers free self-preparation software with no income limit on the help line.

IRS Free File is a separate program: a partnership between the IRS and eight tax software companies who provide their products free to eligible filers. For the most recent season the cutoff was an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. Each partner sets its own additional rules on age, state, and military status, so start from the IRS Free File page rather than going directly to a company's website, where you may land on a paid version instead.

IRS Free File Fillable Forms are available at any income level. They are the electronic equivalent of the paper forms — no interview, no guidance, no math done for you. Fine if you know what you are doing, frustrating if you do not.

One thing to know: IRS Direct File, the free government-run filing tool that operated during the 2024 and 2025 seasons, is no longer available and has not been given a return date. If you used it before, you will need to pick a different option from the list above.

The Earned Income Tax Credit

The Earned Income Tax Credit is the largest refundable tax credit for working people in the country, and it is the single biggest reason it is worth filing a return even when you are not required to.

Refundable means this: if the credit is larger than the tax you owe, the IRS pays you the difference. You do not have to owe anything to receive it. For many working families in Putnam County, the EITC is the largest single check they will see all year.

For the 2026 tax year — the return you will file in early 2027 — the maximum credit is $664 with no qualifying children, $4,427 with one child, $7,316 with two, and $8,231 with three or more. What you actually receive depends on your earned income and filing status; the credit phases in as you earn, plateaus, then phases back out. Investment income above $12,200 disqualifies you entirely.

You can claim the EITC without children. The rules are different — you generally have to be at least twenty-five and under sixty-five at the end of the year, and have lived in the United States for more than half of it — but the credit is real and a lot of single workers never look into it.

The IRS estimates that about one in five people eligible for the EITC does not claim it. Some do not know it exists. Some assume they earn too little to bother filing. Some looked at the forms and gave up. This is precisely what VITA volunteers are trained for, and it costs you nothing to have them check.

Expect the refund to take longer than you want. Federal law requires the IRS to hold refunds on returns claiming the EITC or the Additional Child Tax Credit until mid-February, and the money typically lands in late February or early March even for people who filed the day the season opened. This is not a problem with your return. It is the law, and it applies to everyone claiming these credits. Plan around it rather than borrowing against it.

What to bring

Showing up with everything is the difference between walking out with a filed return and having to come back. Bring:

Photo ID for you, and for your spouse if you are filing jointly. Most VITA sites require both spouses to be present in person to file a joint return.

Social Security cards or ITIN letters for everyone who will appear on the return — you, your spouse, and every dependent. Not just the numbers written down. The actual cards.

Every W-2 and every 1099 you received, including 1099-NEC or 1099-K forms from side work, gig work, or a small business.

Last year's tax return, if you have a copy. Not required, but it makes everything faster.

Your bank routing and account number, for direct deposit.

If you paid for childcare: the provider's name, address, and tax ID number, plus the total you paid.

Form 1095-A if anyone in your household had health insurance through the marketplace.

If you earned tips or overtime, bring records of both. Recent tax law changes created new deductions claimed on a separate schedule, and a volunteer can only apply them if you have the numbers.

That bank account line deserves its own note. The IRS began phasing out paper refund checks in September 2025, which means most filers now need a bank account and routing number to receive a refund at all. If you do not have an account, opening one before you file is worth doing — our Banking Basics page walks through exactly what to bring and what to do if you have been denied an account before.

Why a refund advance costs more than it looks

Every January, storefronts appear offering money today against the refund you have not received yet. When you are behind on rent in January and the refund will not arrive until March, that offer is genuinely tempting. Here is what it actually is.

A refund advance is a loan. Your refund is the collateral. When the IRS releases your money, it pays off the loan first, and you receive whatever is left.

Advances marketed as having no fee and no interest are usually bundled with paid tax preparation that costs a few hundred dollars — the fee is in the preparation, not the loan, and it comes out of your refund either way. Other versions carry origination fees or high short-term interest. Either way you are paying real money for a delay of a few weeks.

Watch for preparers who charge a percentage of your refund rather than a flat fee. That is a red flag, and it gives them an incentive to inflate your return in ways that put you, not them, on the hook in an audit.

Watch too for what the IRS calls ghost preparers: someone who prepares your return for payment but will not sign it or provide their preparer tax identification number. A legitimate paid preparer is required to sign. If they will not, walk away. You are the one who answers for what is on that form.

The honest math is usually this: file for free through VITA, wait the few weeks, and keep the couple hundred dollars. If you truly cannot get to March, come talk to us before you sign anything. Sometimes there is another way through that does not cost you a piece of your refund.

If you owe and cannot pay

File anyway. This is the most important sentence on this page for anyone in this situation.

The IRS charges separate penalties for failing to file and for failing to pay, and the failure-to-file penalty is substantially larger. Not filing because you cannot pay makes the problem worse every month, on top of the balance you already have.

File the return, then deal with the balance. The IRS offers payment plans you can set up online, and for many taxpayers the approval is essentially automatic. You can also request a short-term extension to pay. None of this requires hiring anyone.

If you have not filed in several years, that is a fixable situation and a common one. Some VITA sites help with prior-year and amended returns outside the main filing season. Start by calling and asking — people do this every year, and the sooner you start the smaller the number gets.

And if a letter from the IRS has been sitting unopened on your counter for weeks because you cannot face it, bring it to us. Open it with someone else in the room. Most of them say something far less frightening than what you have been imagining.

Common questions

You may not be required to, but you should. Refundable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit are only paid out if you file a return. People who assume they earned too little to bother filing are the largest group leaving money unclaimed every year. If you had any earned income, it is worth having a VITA volunteer check.

Tennessee does not tax wages. For most people here that means you file a federal return and nothing else, which makes free filing options simpler and faster than they are in most states.

Nothing. The volunteers are IRS-certified and unpaid, every return is reviewed by a second person before filing, and there is no charge for preparation, electronic filing, or the help itself. There is also no charge if you start and decide not to file.

If you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, federal law requires the IRS to hold your entire refund until mid-February, with money typically arriving in late February or early March. It applies to everyone claiming those credits regardless of how early you filed. Nothing is wrong with your return.

It has gotten harder. The IRS began phasing out paper refund checks in September 2025, so most filers now need a routing and account number for direct deposit. Opening a free or low-cost account before you file is the cleanest solution — our Banking Basics page covers what to bring and what to do if you have been turned down before.

It is fixable, and you are not the only one. Some free tax sites assist with prior-year and amended returns outside the main filing season. Penalties and interest keep accruing while you wait, so the sooner you start the smaller the total. Call a VITA site and ask, or come talk with us first if that call feels like too much.

File the return anyway. The penalty for not filing is significantly larger than the penalty for not paying, so not filing makes the problem worse. Once the return is in, you can apply online for an IRS payment plan, and approval is straightforward for most taxpayers.

Yes. The credit is smaller — up to $664 for the 2026 tax year — and you generally need to be at least twenty-five and under sixty-five, and to have lived in the United States for more than half the year. Many single workers never check and never claim it.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1

Tax season is designed in a way that quietly charges people the most when they can least afford it: fees to file, fees to get your own refund faster, fees for a loan against money that is already yours. Almost none of it is necessary. Free help exists, it is staffed by people who are good at this, and it is worth the phone call in January. If you would rather not make that call by yourself, come see us and we will sit down with you.
